Dear friends in Christ,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Feast Day of Saint Patrick on Thursday. As they say, everyone is Irish on Saint Patty’s Day. This coming Saturday, March 19th, we had the great Feast Day of Saint Joseph when everyone is Italian. It reminds me that the Universal Catholic Church is the most diverse religion in the world. As Graham Greene famously said when describing Catholics, “Here come everybody!” One of the biggest myths about Roman Catholicism is that it is a European religion. It started in the Middle East, Ethiopia and is considered to have one of the oldest community of Christians. Our own Pope Francis is from Argentina. The global South continues to see huge growth in Catholicism. If you would like proof of this, come with me next year to the Rite of Election at the Cathedral where we welcome the hundreds and hundreds of folks getting ready for Baptism and Confirmation (500 this year)! The first thing I did when I got back from the Cathedral this year is ordered some Spanish books as the number of our Spanish speaking brothers and sisters who are becoming Catholic is wonderful to behold! The Catholic Church is the most diverse Church in the world and spans the globe made up of a beautiful rainbow of people. We at Saint Matthew and Blessed Sacrament celebrate and recognize this fact. We rejoice and revel in our diversity. Just today in the office, our Immigration and Outreach Service Center is bustling with activity, and I love it! This coming Wednesday is the Feast Day of Saint Turibius, who is thought of as the first Saint of the New World. On this day, we are all from Peru. During this awful war in the Ukraine, we are all Ukrainian as well. Truly one of the most wonderful parts of being a Catholic is that we are part of something so ancient, ever new, full of color and diversity, and unique. Let’s continue to invite everyone to be part of our amazing Church because as we say every weekend, “All are welcome!”
God bless you and continue to pray for peace in our world!
Love,
Fr. Matt

Saint Matthew is in the process of getting a new Parish website that will provide a new look and will be more user-friendly! We have had our current website for five years, so we feel it’s time to upgrade. Our current website will still be accessible and active as all its content is transferred onto the new website, but during the transfer period, our current site will not be updated due to the data migration. Flocknote notices will be sent out when this process begins and again when the new site becomes live.
